An orientation on Special Olympics was conducted at Timken (Chengdu) Aerospace & Precision Products Co. Ltd. in November 2009, with attendance of more than 20 Timken staff.
The training focused on the missions of Special Olympics as well as its development around the world, especially in East Asia region. The participants also had an insight into “Be a Fan”, the newly-launched public awareness campaign by SOI.
Timken volunteers showed great interests in Special Olympics. During the one-hour training, they raised many questions about the movement, although many of them have been actively engaged in the events in local special schools for years. The training, as they commented, was very useful for themselves to learn in a systematic way about SOI and efforts on acceptance and inclusion of people with ID by the whole society.
After the training, SOEA began to recruit SO Fan Club members on site. New members expected to take part in more Special Olympics activities in the future, and promised to urge more people around them to join the movement.
Meanwhile, Timken Chengdu sponsored a local special school for a yearly Unified Games. More than 100 athletes, unified partners and college volunteers attended events of basketball, bocce, relay racing and jumping.
