The 5th Special Olympics China National Games is to be held in Fuzhou, Fujian Province during Sept 19 – Sept 25, 2010. According to the Games Organizing Committee, there will be 2500-3000 athletes from all around China as well as from Hong Kong, Macau and Chinese Taipei, competing in 11 summer sports, i.e., athletics, aquatics, power lifting, table tennis, badminton, roller skating, basketball, football, bocce, judo and bowling. The official invitations will be also sent to Korea, Singapore and United States for dispatching the sports delegations.
During the Games, a series of Special Olympics non-sports events will also be held, including Family Forum, Youth Summit, University Forum, ALPs and 6 disciplines of Healthy Athletes program.
Over 10,000 athletes, coaches, volunteers, families, media and friends are expected to attend the largest Special Olympics event in China ever since the 2007 Shanghai SO WSG.
To prepare for the Games, the local government has invested US$ 36,760,000 (RMB 250,000,000) to build the “Fujian Provincial Sports Management Center for the Disabled”, which covers an area of 110 acres with the Building area of 31,000 square meters. Moreover, the government has also invested US$ 14,700,000 (RMB100,000,000) to renovate other sports venues in Fuzhou that will host competitions for the Games.
On Sept 19, 2009, a large-scale one-year countdown ceremony was held in Fuzhou, with participation of representatives from China Disabled Persons’ Federation, State Sports Bureau, Special Olympics China and other local governmental organizations. Representatives from SOEA also attended the ceremony as special guests.
