Don Mischer Gears Up For Special Olympics Opening  

SHANGHAI -- Hot on the heels of their success producing the opening and half time shows at this year's Super Bowl, Don Mischer Prods. is gearing up for its next big challenge: the Special Olympics World Summer Games, due in October in Shanghai .

DMP's creative team, which will work alongside execp producers Don Mischer and David Goldberg, will consist of local talent including director Lu Chuan ("Kekexili: Mountain Patrol") as artistic director; Zhang Xiaohai, a senior director at state broadcaster China Central Television, as co-director; and cellist Yo-Yo Ma as music adviser.

Writer Yu Qiuyu has been named artistic adviser, musician Liu Tong is music director and stage designer Yan Wenlong is scenic director.

Game organizers also announced that Lang Lang, an emerging pianist who has been chosen spokesperson for the games, is the first Chinese performer to confirm that he will play at the opening ceremony on October 2.

Other international stars taking part in the event include Olympics global ambassador Zhang Ziyi ,Jackie Chan,Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell and Eva Mendes .

"Through the collaboration of all production team members, the games' opening ceremony will undoubtedly become an unforgettable experience for an audience of millions," said Don Misher, who will direct TV broadcasts of the ceremony.

The producers, however, refused to disclose what the ceremony will include, saying details won't be announced until next month.

Scheduled to run from October 2 to 11, the 2007 Special Olympics mark the first time the event will be held in Asia. It is expected to gather 7,200 athletes, 40,000 volunteers and thousands of spectators from 167 countries and regions.

The Special Olympics World Summer Games, which celebrate the achievements of intellectually disabled people, have never been held in Asia before, and have only once left the U.S. (2003, Ireland).
