MD Message: 2nd Quarter 2006

It's been quite a busy and productive few months for all of us at Special Olympics East Asia! With the 2007 World Summer Games just 18 months away, our region will continue to be busier and busier!

First and foremost, I want to give a big CONGRATULATIONS to all of our programs for their athlete growth figures for 2005! Each and every one of our programs in our region recorded an increase in athlete figures for 2005 over 2004. Special Olympics Korea registered the biggest proportional increase, up 66% to 7,149 athletes. Also, as reported before Special Olympics China surpassed its goal of 500,000 athletes by reaching 550,693 athletes! This represents 1/4 of the total 2.2 million athletes for Special Olympics worldwide. In addition, Special Olympics Chinese Taipei had 12,756 athletes, Hong Kong recorded 8,456 and Macau had 1,345.  Read More...

Apart from the above, Watsons was the event sponsor for our 2005 Hong Kong Special Olympics Golf Fun Day on June 7, 2005.  More...

2006 Sneaker Ball

The 2006 Special Olympics Sneaker Ball, hosted by the American Community Club on Saturday, April 22 was a huge success!!  The sold out event raised more funds than any other gala for Special Olympics in Beijing -- nearly $150,000 USD, which will support family activities during the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai as well as sponsor a local special education school in Beijing.

All aspects of the event including the Grand Hyatt venue, sultry sounds from Chinese Pop star, Ye Pei,  the delicious food, the great live and silent auction items, the sponsors, and the Rock & Roll music provided by Hard Rock Cafe's bands -- Night Shift and Bridges were terrific!!  The festive evening was accentuated by sneakers of all styles and colors...most of which spent the evening on the dance floor!
