Spring is an incredible time of the year for Special Olympics East Asia. Around the region Special Olympics Programs, Sub-Programs and local programs are holding their year end games and competition.
Last week I attended a Special Olympics Day at Chongwen Special School in Beijing. This is a school that was visited by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver, Tim Shriver and district education ministry leaders for a similar Special Olympics Day in 2000. Read More... |

Mattel Inc and the Mattel Children's Foundation announced the launch of a 3-year global partnership with Special Olympics on March 15, 2005. Support will focus on the development of three programs, the Young Athlete Program, which will engage youth ages 2 through 7 with intellectual disabilities; the Special Olympics Get Into It ™ (SO Get Into It) school-based curriculum, which teaches understanding, acceptance and involvement; and Team Mattel, which engages Mattel employees as volunteers in the Special Olympics movement around the world. Funding for the first year will total US$1 million. This month, Mattel’s China operations celebrated this global partnership with a series of Special Olympics related events in Guangzhou in southern China. Volunteer Spotlight: Wenzhou Medical College |

Wenzhou Medical College and its doctors have been Special Olympics volunteers for several years and are the driving force behind the opening of the history making Eunice Kennedy Shirver Special Olympics Health Center.
The relationship between Wenzhou Medical College and Special Olympics unofficially began in February 2001 at the World Winter Games in Alaska, when an eye doctor named Dr. Lu Fan attended and volunteered at the Games. Then in July 2001 Dr. Chen Hao attended the United Kingdom Games and observed the Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes ® program. The Opening Eyes program seeks to provide quality eye care for people with intellectual disabilities, and Dr. Hao decided to propose a role for the program in the 2002 Xi'an National Games in China. Athlete Spotlight: Xu Chuang |

Xu Chuang of Shanghai, China, credits Special Olympics for providing him the opportunity to grow and succeed. "I was once very shy and not willing to talk with others," he said. "Special Olympics changed my life and my love of sports and helped me achieve all this unimaginable success." Xu Chuang won a gold medal in table tennis at the 5th Special Olympics Shanghai Games in 1999 and a silver medal in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 2003 as a member of the Special Olympics China soccer team. Today he runs every morning and trains for competitions in a variety of sports including table tennis, floor hockey and football. Read More...

Team spirit, endurance and excitement were all in abundance at the 2005 Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, held at Shatin in Hong Kong. Over 1,200 law enforcers runners from seven disciplinary forces - Correctional Services Department, Customs & Excise Department, Fire Services Department, Government Flying Service, Hong Kong Police, Immigration Department, Independent Commission Against Corruption - together with our 200 Special Olympics athletes, took part in this thrilling annual fund raising event.
