2005 World Winter Games are Here! A message from George Smith, Managing Director of Special Olympics East Asia:
Special Olympics World Games are the flagship event for the Movement. It is so moving to see heads of state, celebrities and corporate leaders, standing side by side with family members, volunteers and Japanese citizens celebrating the achievements of the Special Olympics athletes. Seeing the athletes’ incredible performances reminds us of all the training and competition that occurs every day everywhere around the world.

2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games Officially Underway
The 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games officially began in Nagano, Japan on Saturday, February 26 with the opening ceremonies held at M-Wave, one of the world’s largest indoor speed skating rinks and site of the 1998 Olympic Winter Games speed skating competition. The Games will be held from February 26 to March 5, 2005.
Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver attended the opening ceremonies, welcoming the nearly 1,900 athletes from more than 80 countries participating in the Games.

2007 World Summer Games Update
The 2007 World Games Steering Committee will be hosting a special one-day convention on the upcoming 2007 World Games while in Japan, for the 2005 World Winter Games. The function will welcome 86 representatives from Special Olympics national and regional delegations, Special Olympics International staff and Chinese diplomatic representatives.

Figure Skater Kurtis Siu
Special Olympics Hong Kong athlete Kurtis Siu will be competing in figure skating events at the 2005 World Winter Games in Nagano. Kurtis began competing with Special Olympics when a Special Olympics coach saw him and his family ice skating in September 2003 and asked him to join his figure skating team. [>>More]
Figure Skater Ma Yongli
Ma Yongli has earned the nickname of “kaixinguo” in Chinese (which means “pistachio” but can be literally translated as “happy nut”) because of his happy-go-lucky personality. Our “pistachio” will be participating in figure skating competitions in Nagano at the World Winter Games. [ >> Read More ]
