The Wenzhou Medical College, a Special Olympics Regional Collaborating Center, has established the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Special Olympics Sports Health Center. The Center, named after the founder of Special Olympics, will provided healthcare services to people with intellectual disabilities throughout the East Asia region.
The opening ceremony of the Center took place on November 9 and was attended by numerous Chinese government officials of all levels - municipal, provincial, and central. The Chairman and CEO of Special Olympics, Dr. Timothy Shriver, attended the opening along with the leadership of the East Asia Programs, regional observers from the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes global clinical program, and volunteers from Chinese and Hong Kong districts of the International Lions Clubs.
A MedFest screening took place on November 8 and 9 in which over 620 people with intellectual disabilities were given health screenings and recruited into Special Olympics. A Healthy Athletes Opening Eyes screening also took place, in which Special Olympics athletes were given vision examinations by volunteer healthcare professionals and provided with corrective eyewear if necessary. |
