[December, 2003] Wenzhou Medical College, a Special Olympics Regional Collaborating Center, hosted a training session for more than 30 health care professionals from around China from 9-11 December. The event was a collaboration between Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®, the college and Special Olympics China. Health care professionals from Beijing and Shanghai as well as Heilongjiang, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces traveled to Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, for the three-day training. Attendees from the Special Olympics East Asia Programs of Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau also attended. The professionals, depending on their expertise, were instructed by trainers from around the region and the United States on participation in Special Olympics Lions Clubs International-Opening Eyes®, Healthy Hearing® and Special Smiles® programs. The training sessions included one-day screenings of Special Olympics athletes from Wenzhou special education schools. The event also included a ceremony commemorating the partnership between Special Olympics and Wenzhou Medical College that earlier this year resulted in the establishment of the college as a Special Olympics Regional Collaborating Center. Along with journalists, doctors and Wenzhou professors, 400 students attended this ceremony, with many of them later signing-up to be volunteers with their local Special Olympics Program.
