Beijing Sports University Hosts Special Olympics Sports Day

A Special Olympics Sports Day was held at the Beijing Sports University on April 21, 2004. Over 150 university students coordinated a day of competitions and sport demonstrations, complete with opening, award, and closing ceremonies, for Special Olympics Beijing athletes. The event is a culmination of an eight week course attended by over 300 university students on adapted physical education. The curriculum, and event, are part of the Special Olympics East Asia University Initiative, a long term project that aims to teach physical education students from around China how to incorporate Special Olympics training into their curriculum as well as develop Special Olympics sub-programs. The event also served to build awareness in the community of the Special Olympics Movement. The volunteers were joined by over 150 Special Olympics athletes, teachers, coaches, and volunteers from the Haidian, Xicheng, and Chongwen Peizhi special education schools.

The event began with opening ceremonies that included speeches by Mr. Wang Zhijun, Chairman of Special Olympics China and Mr. George Smith, Managing Director of Special Olympics East Asia. The honorary guests included Professor Jin Jichun, former president of Beijing Physical University and Mr. He Zhenwen, Vice President of the Beijing Physical University. After the speeches, all participants and volunteers signed a giant banner signifying their commitment to support and promote Special Olympics. Athletes and volunteers then took part in 3-on-3 women's basketball and 5-on-5 men's football competitions as well as demonstrations of basketball, golf, bocce and roller-skating skills. University students are also assisting with the Unified Sports program and are planning to hold a Unified Sports competition for over 1,000 athletes.

The Special Olympics East Asia University Initiative has implemented the curriculum at universities in five cities around China. The Initiative is funded by a $30,000 grant from the JP Morgan Foundation. Refreshments at the Special Olympics Sports Day were donated by Coca-Cola.
