SO Get Into It to Reach Over 30,000 Students in Beijing
Xicheng School District

A ceremony was held on April 29 to mark the launch of the Special Olympics Get Into It curriculum in the Beijing Xicheng District schools. The curriculum will be taught at all 150 schools in this district during the next academic year, reaching over 30,000 students. Special Olympics China, the Chinese Ministry of Education, and Special Olympics East Asia have worked closely to ensure the curriculum was translated and placed correctly in the annual Chinese school curriculum. Meetings between Tim Shriver and the leaders of the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2002 and 2003 also helped to move this program forward.

The Xicheng district is the first school district in Beijing to incorporate SO Get Into It into their curriculum but will hopefully become the model for other districts around the city and country. The curriculum will be rolled out nationally within China to promote inclusion and interaction between regular education students and special education students. The current program is encouraging all 30,000 students to take part in Unified Sports activities and volunteer roles within Special Olympics. This launch is an example of one school district doing something to create massive attitudinal change.
