Thanks to a generous grant from Otis-China, Special Olympics China and Special Olympics East Asia held their first 2003 Leadership Training seminars in Haikou, Hainan Province in southern China during February 20 -25. The jointly-held training sessions focused on Coaches Training and the development of the Family Support Network. Sixty teachers, coaches and officers from the China Disabled Persons' Federation, hailing from 13 districts within the province, attended the Coach Training Seminar. The training included an introduction to Special Olympics, specific training on selected sports, and concluded with a mini Special Olympics mock competition organized by the participants. Twenty-five family members and seven Special Olympics athletes attended the Family Support Network Training sessions. The family members and athletes met to learn about the Family Support Network, share their experiences of caring for people with mental disabilities, and then to develop a course of action and a plan on how to reach out to other families. The purpose of concurrently conducting these two seminars was to link the work of both the coaches and the family members in organizing more local Special Olympics programs. This unique approach was a huge success and with the continued support of Otis-China, there will be four upcoming seminars throughout China during 2003.
