| On
19-20 May, 2008, Special Olympics recognized organizations and individuals
whose contributions were critical success factors of the 2007 Special
Olympics World Summer Games held in Shanghai, China, last October
during the meetings of International Board of Directors. The Celebration,
attended by over 200 VIP guests, was held at the Headquarters of
Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia, which sponsored the events.
The World Games Organizing Committee was presented an award by
the Chairman of Special Olympics, Dr. Timothy Shriver. Mr. Jia Yong,
Executive Chairman of SO China received the award on behalf of the
GOC of 2007 World Summer Games.
Special Olympics International Board Member, and former President
of Special Olympics East Asia, Dr. Dicken Yung was honored for his
significant leadership and contributions to Special Olympics over
almost four decades. His wife, Meilin and six grown up children
were also recognized for their long time voluntary service.
In his remarks at the award ceremony, Dr.Yung recognized the farsightedness
of the Shrivers in developing the Asia Pacific Region. Dr. Yung
further said, “My family and I have enjoyed working for the
great movement of Special Olympics. Serving the intellectually disabled
persons and their families, especially in China has been a great
honor and privilege!”

The other recipients were the Coca-Cola Company,
Mattel, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Samuel
Family Foundation, Harvard Law School Professor William Alford
and Actress and Recording Artist Vanessa Williams.
More than 7,257 athletes representing 164 countries
participated in the World Games, 200 million people representing
80 countries around the world watched the Opening Ceremony, and
the Games generated over 1 billion media impressions worldwide.
“The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games
in Shanghai were an unprecedented event that has helped to change
the lives of millions of people worldwide,” said Special
Olympics Chairman Timothy Shriver.
The Coca-Cola Company and Special Olympics also
announced on 20 May the renewal of their partnership through 2011
and further strengthening of their 40-year relationship. The worldwide
sponsorship commitment of the Company, which covers the calendar
years 2008 through 2011 – including support for the 2009
Special Olympics World Winter Games and the 2011 World Summer
Games – consists of cash, in-kind products and services,
technical support and marketing and fund-raising support for Special
Olympics.
