Special Olympics Hong Kong Launches Bocce

The sport of bocce was launched by Special Olympics Hong Kong during a train the trainer seminar held on March 29 - 31, 2004. The trainings were led by Mr. He Yi, Special Olympics East Asia Regional Trainer and Ms. Jennifer Chuang, Special Olympics Chinese Taipei coach. Fifty-eight teachers, coaches, and instructors from special education schools and shelter workshops attended the training which also included 150 Special Olympics athletes from 10 special education schools and training centers. The seminar included two days of instruction and one day of hands-on athlete training. A special education teacher who attended the event said, " Bocce is quite easy to handle and suitable for our students with low ability. I will try to promote this sport in our school."

The event included an opening ceremony held prior to the commencement of the training sessions which included George Smith, Managing Director of Special Olympics East Asia and Charlie Chang, Director of Sports Development for Special Olympics East Asia. Regular bocce training for Special Olympics Hong Kong athletes began in early April and a select group of athletes will take part in the regional bocce competition scheduled to take place in Taipei in June, 2004. Special Olympics Hong Kong plans to send a bocce team to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.
