During May 6 - June 4, 2006, Special Olympics Chinese Taipei (SOCT) held its All-Taiwan Games. These games consisted of qualifying trials for 12 sports with the purpose of selecting athletes to represent SOCT to participate in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games. In total, 150 official athletes and 150 backup athletes were chosen and will train for one year to compete in the next Special Olympics World Summer Games which are held once every 4 years.
1,549 athletes competed in 12 sports, including Roller Skating, Cycling, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Bowling, Golf, Athletics, Bocce and Aquatics. There were also 3,000 coaches, volunteers and family members at the All-Taiwan Games. During the games, Special Olympics outreach initiatives such as the Family Support Network and Youth Summit were also conducted. In addition, products with the Special Olympics logo were sold as a fundraiser.
SOCT's Law Enforcement Torch Run program has developed very well in the past few years, with the great support from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Following the international model, SOCT also invited the local enforcement officers to attend this All- Taiwan Games. All the officers devoted themselves to this competition with great passion, and escorted the athletes and torch into the venues, as well as working as volunteers to award medals.. Specially, the law enforcement officer from Jiayi city drove their Harley motorcycles to lead the parade into the venue. The dedication and concern from these officers make a huge impact on people with intellectual disabilities, their families, coaches and the volunteers. The participation by the law enforcement officers was also the focus of many of the subsequent media reports.
Congratulations to SOCT to a successful All-Taiwan Games!
