The Special Olympics China Adopt-a-School Program was initiated in 1997 as a means for corporations, organizations or individuals to directly support the development of Special Olympics programs at special educations schools in China. The Program was initiated in Shanghai and expanded, soon thereafter, to Beijing. The program allows special education schools to purchase new sports equipment and conduct additional Special Olympics trainings for athletes of varying skill and ability levels as well as host small competitions.
Prior to obtaining donated funds, the special education schools provide a plan and budget to Special Olympics China staff who then administer the allocation of the donated funds. The corporations and individuals donating the funds are then encouraged to visit their "adopted" school and hold Unified Sports and training events. The Adopt-a-School program offers donors an obvious and tangible way to invest in their local communities. It builds awareness of the Special Olympics Movement as well as demonstrates the donor's social responsibility to their local communities.
2005-2006 Corporate donors include Bayer Corporation, the Western Academy of Beijing, Johnson Controls Group, Shangri-La's Kerry Centre Hotel, UBS, Concord College, Hewlett-Packard, the Canadian Embassy, Marriott, as well as individual donors.
One of the most successful Adopt-a-School partnerships has been with the Bayer Corporation. Through the leadership of William Valentino, Bayer General Manager for Corporate Communications in China, the company has sponsored two special education schools in Beijing and Shanghai in 2003 -- a commitment that increased to three schools in 2004. Their two year donation, totaling $25,000, has helped their adopted schools build strong Special Olympics training programs. Mr. Valentino has also engaged Bayer staff in volunteering with the school as well as participating in a Unified Sports bowling event with the school.
